Third Dimension

Does anyone here know how many holes are usually completed in the attempt to attain the three dimensional  configuration (I am assuming this, generally to mean,  the width x length x depth) of the find?  Would it be safe to say that 10 to 12 holes would be the start, middle or finalizing of this process?

I understand why the bore holes are angled and why they reach various depths.  I really want to just know how close NOT might be to defining the third dimension.

 Thanks for everyone's great help.
