miskealp, and every one else Just to get it out there for scrutiny, The Sudbury Meteor Theory and consequent of impact... Impact occurs. Debris splatters off in all directions laterally. Infil material collides at center of impact location. Resulting force causes debris rushing back into impact crater (viscous material at this point) to squirt perpendicular to point of return collision - shoots up into atmosphere. Earth's rotation displaces this ejected return material such that it returns to Earth in westerly location from site of impact. Minnesota is directly west of Sudbury. Every one should be able to envision seeing a rain droplet hit a relatively calm water surface. think of the water that shoots straight up after the impact of the droplet with the water surface. Then think of where it would be returning to the water surface if the water body is speeding along a highway - thus displacement due to planetary rotation. Now think of Crustal Plate Tectonics. The edges of the plates are either spreading apart, colliding together, or scraping past one another. Does that put stresses and strains on the Crust in from the edge of the Tectonic Plates. The crust is basically what we think of as being rigid and somewhat brittle, being a solid. But in overall terms it is known to not be completely rigid and not completely homogeneous in composition. Mineral Exploration is all about locating and testing the heterogeneous materials in the crust. They generally are referred to as Anomalies. Plate Tectonics also theorizes that this surface crust is floating on a viscous underlying material we call the Earths 'Mantle'. Now, go back to the rain droplet and water. When the droplet (Asteroid/Meteor) strikes the water surface (Earth's Crust) it also sends out shock waves horizontally along the surface of the crust (and also through the crust - thus the use of Seismic waves to detect differences in rock densities, etc.) and down into the underlying water (Earth's Mantle). You can see such waves propagate outward from the point of impact on the water surface (Crust surface). Shock waves go in all directions but we can easily see them on water surfaces as waves. Thus giving the ability to imagine the same occurring through air (gases - atmosphere) and ground (solids - Earths Crust) and water (liquid - Earths Mantle). The very same thing would be expected to occur with Asteroid impacts on the Earth. Now, given that things all happen in time and Dr. Mungall suggests that there were previous events in the area of the JBL that resulted in the intrusion of Magnetite and/or Iron Sulfides.... The areas of Tectonic Plates away from the edges are under stress/strain etc. and the intruding event material pushes through the crustal rock causing weakening (cracks- veining) of the host rock. This occuring very slowly in Geologic time scale. The intruding material forms a more coherent solid compared to the host rock it intruded, and therefore is comparatively more solid (strong and consolidated) than the rock it entered into. Now, some time later there is an impact of an Asteroid with the Earths surface many miles away. All hell breaks loose and there is massive amounts of energy (kinetic energy - energy of motion) dispersed outward in all directions from the point of impact. In the Crust this energy re-weakens the previously already weakened host rock in the Mc Fauld's Lake area, turning it to even less consolidated rock along the margins of the previously intruded and more coherent (solid) Magnetite/Iron Sulfide Intrusion. During the same event the Energy dispersed through the Mantle (more viscous material compared to the Crust) arrives a short time later and causes more shatering of the now twice weakened host rock and creates a wide area of weakening all throughout the Mc Fauld's area in our particular case. The mantle material, being much more viscous, also forces its way up through much of the weakened Crustal rck as the Crustal rock in this area provides an escape route for much of the Kinetic Energy placed on/in the viscous Mantle material. Once underway the movement of Mantle material may continue for quite some time afterward due to the pressures within the area Crust caused by the ever continuous Tectonic Plate activity (stresses and strains, etc.) extending inward from the edges. The result is Mantal material, now under increased pressure, continuously flowing through the newly developing Channels in the weakened Crustal Host rock. This Mantal material moving through Crustal Host rock is called Magma. The Magma being much hotter and forced to move, under pressure from the pent up forces acting on the underlying Mantle material, heats up and interacts with the encapsulating Host rock. As the Magma flows through the newly created Channels in this Crustal Host rock, it eats away (melts/dissolves/leaches) Host rock material along its edges. Where it is passing along side Sulfur rich, comparatively well consolidated Host rock it extracts much of the Sulfur from the adjacent Magnetite and Iron Sulfide Host rock. Having said all that, I get a feeling that what caused the deposition of the 'High Grade' mineralization we have at Eagle1 was a comparatively short Geological Event, something akin to what was describe above. With too much time (a long lasting Geological Event) the surrounding rock would have had more time to accept seepage of mineralized magma into a greater area of the host rock. The resulting consequent would be lower grade ore over larger areas. NOT perfect, but acts as a conceptual model to check other explanations against and to associate the various info/data with. However, what I do not know nearly enough about is the Chemistry of mineralization formation. Thus, if some knowledgeable Geochem types could provide needed input I/we can develop increased understanding as to how and why the mineralization eventually forms as we are finding it at Double Eagle. Likewise, any Geologist or Geophysicist types who can set me straight on with alternative Formation Event possibilities, I would be most pleased to learn. Any and all alternate Theories and or insights are welcome. If I am half correct on some of the reasoning/rationalization I used in this construction, then there could be some big ramifications to our Eagle1 Discovery and for other area Discoverys as well, both already made and as yet to be made.
