The vast majority is just by its meaning a magnanimous term. Vast makes it sound like 90% but I doubt that.

You are right all the same though. Everyone rationalizes. They must. if we didn't rationalize we wouldn't do anything. Or conversely, you would do anything. So to rationalize is a mechanism by which the human species does several things. To buy something they don't really need for instance. It is actually a very protective mechanism if its working properly and you have no personality disorders to go with it. Rationalizing is a form of weighing the odds as well IMHO and its done on the boards like you say even when you choose sides in a discussion.

Your rationale is that it is good to respond to someone who, in good faith puts out some info or enlightens or adds to the info. I agree.
