From what I have read about the poison pill, it will dilute the group trying to take over by offering all other shareholders new shares at 50% of the current share price.  With this dilution, it will be much harder for them to acquire enough votes for the take over.  So it is not only a delay tactic but a dilution tactic that would cause the take over group to lose their percentage of ownership.  this makes it very unlikely that someone would try this.
