Hey, I've got German Lutheran friends here in Texas that use that exact same expression you did (which I've never heard before - but maybe because I led a somewhat sheltered childhood)

"do not let the bsrds grind you down"

I've heard "get you down" before - but "grind you down" seems more picturesque.
