Here's an interesting excerpt ( one of many, truth be told)
"Anderson and colleagues suggest that almost all flood basalts are erupted near the edge of Archean cratons, which is a feature not readily explained by a plume source....many cratonic boundaries ...were not cratonic boundaries during flood basaltic eruption. It was not until Pangea broke up that these cratons became "marginal" cratons."
