Why don't you try to book a B&B? If you get one outside of the city that is anywhere near the Hudson river, you can easily commute to downtown by train. My sister in law is a missionary nun whose mother house is Maryknole NY, across the road from Sing-Sing - we stayed there once for $20. per night and the ride on the train was about 45 minutes to Grand Central'
