There are several reasons for one to use a name that closely resembles that of another.

The individual wants the forum to mistake him in the hopes that he will accrue more points quickly.

To post negative in order to cause aggravation to the individual and the forum.

There is another reason, and that is out of respect for the poster. One poster may take on a similar name to that of a like minded and good poster. Take for example Paliman and palimaniac. I believe that is a good example.....:)
