Significance of Probes Assays

It is my understanding that in some layered mafic/ultramafic complexes, one can find discrete, layers/bands of differing widths/thicknesses which contain highly anomalous to economic concentrations of PGEs. These layers are not obvious when logging drill core, and can only be detected by assay. I believe that you can find a number of examples in the Bushveld Complex.
