I will try and keep this short.
I was coming home late from a business meeting and my wife emailed me that the family had already had dinner. So I stopped at a pub on the way home and ate at the bar. Having been a bartender for many years putting my way through school I have no problem meeting new people or starting up a converstion.
There was a small crowd around the bar and I decided to make some small talk about the markets. Then went in for the "can you believe what that hedge fund is trying to do to NORONT.
Sure enough there was one guy there who was an investor
short history:
he bought 85,000 shares at an average price of $0.88 and sold out at avg price of "just under $6"
bought himself a corvette and a few other toys.
He bought back in for 10,000 shares at $3.40
NOW this is where it gets interesting. I asked him if he had voted yet? He said "NO" that the proxies were in a drawer at home but he had talked to his broker this morning about it and the broker suggested if he voted for the new BOD there would be a quick buck to be made.(he seemed quite excited about the idea.
I immediately said "Who made you the money so far?"
"Do you know anything about the new board?" as you can imagine the conversation went on about all the great things this board has taught me.
He was very upset on the facts I provided and I gave him my card and the AGORACOM website to check out for himself.
He said if what I say is true he will definitely vote for current management. On the back of my card I wrote "your 10,000 shares could make all the difference"
The moral to the story is:
(1) We are working against a large force including brokers that need to start turning dollars to support their cause - screw the long term profits - get what you can today
(2) You have no idea where you can influence people. Talk it up folks anywhere anytime if there is a group of people how hard is it say "how about the run up/down on the TSX? and then start the ball rolling.
WE NEED AVERY SINGLE VOTE IF IT IS 500 OR 10,000 OR 100,000 AT A TIME
Over the next few days take your better half out for a dinner or drink and be apart of the crowd. The few dollars you spend may pay of in spades
