Takeovers return to junior mining

Andrew Willis, 28/01/09 at 9:30 AM EST

While the stakes are small, the slugfest over junior gold play Central Sun Mining shows that contested takeovers are back in the junior resource sector.

Central Sun sports a property in Nicaragua, a $37-million market cap and two determined suitors. They are B2Gold, which revealed a friendly deal on Tuesday, and rival bidder Linear Gold, which saw its bid topped.

There have been bids and counter-offers, quickly struck financings bought deals, and the outcome here remains very much in doubt. The investment bankers involved have been able to shake off the rust: Macquaire Capital Markets is on for Central Sun, B2Gold has Genuity Capital Markets in its corner and Cormark Securities is advising Linear

All this activity is a reassuring sign of life in a takeover market that has been all too quiet. Boards and bankers are emerging from corporate bunkers, and returning to growth through acquisition.
