I recall Richard on a number of occasions saying that in the end, when a Major would be negotiating with NOT, the Major would not be interested in dealing with many separate entities (jv's) all over the terrain, but rather with one Management ,if at all possible. Makes for easier negotiating.

Could be why Richard negotiated rather easy contracts with the JV's, knowing that when the moment came to deal with the Major, he could probably easily persuade the jv's to come under one NOT umbrella.

Hope it 's still a possibility...
