Interesting rumour !!!
"Cliffs has apparently paid CP Rail $1 million NOT to dismantle railroad track from Geraldton - the first indicator that a rail line to McFauld's is well on the way perhaps?!"
CP rail doesn't own this line CN Rail does.
Part of the line was taken up last fall, early winter.I believe the rest is destined to come out this summer. I have a call into the person who would know, however he is on vacation till next week.Hope to get an answer back, when he returns.
This line runs from Longlac to Thunder Bay. Thats 195 miles. CN will not keep this line open for the amount of ore coming out of the McFaulds Lake area. It is just too costly to maintain.
However Cliffs could purchase the line and operate it themselves. If this was the case, in all probability then trucks would operate from McFaulds Lake down through Marten Falls, Nakina and then over to Geradlton(this portion is approx 40 miles).
This would eliminate approx 40 miles of rail line from Longlac to Geraldton.
