Looks like the government is finally understanding that 'big business' does not mean 'good business'

Industry Minister Clement Demands Answers From Vale Inco

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 19, 2009) - The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry, today made the following statement regarding the plans released by Vale Inco regarding an eight-week shut down of its Ontario operations.

"The shut down announced by Vale Inco is certainly not welcome news to the Government of Canada or to the people of Sudbury. I am very concerned that Vale Inco intends to proceed with this shut down.

"Our thoughts are with the workers and their families at this time. Should the temporary layoffs occur, the Government of Canada will ensure workers are informed about the supports that may be available to them under the Employment Insurance program.

"The government has demanded answers from the company today to explain how its announcement has an impact on the undertakings it agreed to when Companhia Vale do Rio Doce purchased Inco in 2006. Vale made legally binding commitments under the Investment Canada Act at that time that I expect to be fully respected on behalf of the workers. Over the next few days, we will be exploring all available options, including legal options, to address this situation".
