when transferring stocks into a TFSA, the previous days closing price (if done during trading hours on the present day) is used to determine the amount of shares ($5000 worth) transferred. In other words, do not transfer cash if you can avoid it, wait until a stock you own goes way up from one day to the next, then call in the transfer and get it deposited into your TFSA at the lower closing value from the previous day, this way you get an instant benefit of hindsight, tax free!
