The reasons some ideas are called theories is because all the data necessary for a law (Fact) is not there or there are holes in the proposal. Playing devil's advocate, a suggestions:

Hole 50 was most likely decided upon as to location and depth before hole 49 was completed or before they had hand held readings of it's cores. There is no reason to think that hole 50 was a decision after the facts of hole 49. Hole 50's drill was likely already moved or drilling before 49 was completed. Also there is no reason to think that the depth for 50 had to be to full capacity of the drill. All they needed was sufficient depth for BHEM to get a good perspective for measurements. My guess half of typical hole's depth to minimize expense.

Though I like the thought, provokes thinking regarding more possibilities, and am intrigued by conspiracies.
