Message: Opening up the North

Hornepayne, Schreiber, Wawa, White River. Why am I starting to feel cold? I saw it 60 below zero up there once and pretty much minus thirty degrees or less for about six weeks steady after Christmas.

In 1966, I went through Hornepayne twice on a freight train. The first time I don't remember. I might have missed it. The second time I was hungry and they told me I had two minutes to get something to eat before the train pulled out again. I ran like heck and found a pool room where they sold me a bag of chips and a pop. I made it back on time. I didn't see any of those white tablecloths, silver teapots, and silver with CN on the cutlery. It was the best bag of chips and the best pop I ever bought though.

I also lived in a remote Northern Ontario community where they talked of "going out". I'm starting to feel cold again.

Now I guess I'll be retired in a few years and I was thinking of making one of my first retirement projects a drive into Webequie and Nemisville on the newly constructed highway past Nakina. I'll do it in the summer.
