The native blockade of the Ring of Fire will continue.

Webeque Chief Cornelius Waboose said his people will continue the protest until there is more definite action to protect First Nations interests. Hopes were raised this week that the five-week old blockade would be ended. Organizers had asked for and received submissions from mining companies and the province on how they would address concerns related to mineral development in the region.

But Chief Waboose said those submissions did not provide a firm commitment that lands would be protected and First Nations communities would prosper through this development. He said a Memorandum of Understanding must be agreed to that will ensure his people's interests before any mining activity will be allowed to commence.

It's believed chromite deposits in the Ring of Fire have the potential to become the next major mining development in Canada.
