First Nation consent needed before development: Ontario told

By tbnewswatch.comThe Grand Chief of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation says the province can make all the promises they want, but at the end of the day there will be no resource development in the Ring of Fire without First Nation consent.

Stan Beardy was reacting to the Liberal government's Open Ontario plan, which will be unveiled in the upcoming throne speech.

The strategy includes plans to help northern residents and First Nations develop the Ring of Fire. The area 300 kilometres north of Nakina may be the largest chromite deposit in the world.

Beardy says communities in NAN territory are not against the development, but want guarantees of meaningful participation and economic benefits
