We have at hand a tremendous opportunity to benefit ourselves, FN, and all shareholders. The resource will over time become generally accepted as a world class deposit. Let's assume that. But that defines only one ingredient in the mix, the next one being, who with deep pockets will beat a path to our deposit(s) with a billion plus they may never see again ?
The good government finance folks in Australia today gave a world class example of what NOT to do. Pass a tax regime that essentially presents mine developers not as risk takers but as usurious squanderers of national non renewables, then pass a draconian tax that ignores hard work, risk taking and committed investment. If you think 'down one cent on NOT' is material, try down $9 BILLION at the yesterday's ASX open.
OK, so how can we benefit , and , whats to do? The Aussie based majors will attempt to mitigate the worst aspects of the legislation. They will have only minimal success. They will then vote with their feet as to new major investment. Rudd today clearly redefined "political instability" to the majors in Australia.
Our Plan of Action: Get all the RoF Boards and shareholders and community stakeholders including the unions , from Sudbury north, off their (brains) and embark on a full scale lobby for a twenty year tax free zone in Northern Ontario for all new mines opened in the next 10 years. Were that to happen, every major would be on our (yes, NOT's) doors in a day to build out this world class mining district. The FN could really enjoy and rely on the partnership of interests. CLF would throw money at us.
If such a lobby you all might reason, could not succeed , what would you think as a major scanning over the bog ? Trust them, they're capitalists ? Can't happen here? Reality check please. It did happen here in a lesser way with forestry in the 1990's. When the bureaucrats get deperate for $$, it WILL happen here. A 20 year TFZ or its proxy will soon become the chief pre-requisite for major mine investment in heavily socialised parts of the world .(That is us ) Otherwise , unless you are a compulsive gambler , keep your powder safe and move on.
This is an absolute advantage to RoF today, because the support would in all likelihood be forthcoming with a concerted effort of all major stakeholders. And yes, as in Aussieland, the greens will always be on the other side.
Would anyone like to discuss this ?
