I don't think they where told "work or get shot"...Most of these imigrants were of Scottish and Irish decent and the pay was small back then...tracts of land along the Rideau canal and Erie Canal..for their work.

Imagine if that land was kept in the family up to today (a lot of it has been) what it would be worth!!

Yes they did die of fever and accidents,but back then medicine was in its infantsy and a lot of people died, that would not sucome today.
