Director, Aboriginal Community and Stakeholder Relations

This is an exciting time to join the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry, Ring of Fire Secretariat. The Ring of Fire, located in the James Bay Lowlands, is home to one of the most promising mineral development opportunity in northern Ontario’s recent history. The Ring of Fire development is a key government priority, and is one of several transformational initiatives the ministry is embarking on in support of environmental, social and economic prosperity for Ontario. In this role, as Director, Aboriginal Community and Stakeholder Relations, you will contribute to the success of the Ring of Fire initiative by engaging Aboriginal communities and a variety of diverse stakeholders to support the creation and implementation of appropriate strategies for both communities and industry in northern Ontario. If you are passionate about collaboration and promoting economic opportunity in northern Ontario, consider applying to this high-profile and challenging position. Specifically, you will:
• provide leadership in identifying strategic opportunities for partnership with Aboriginal communities to provide economic opportunities associated with the Ring of Fire initiative
• provide guidance to government staff to ensure that programs, services and decisions are balanced with constitutionally protected Aboriginal rights
• consult with Aboriginal communities and pursue negotiations that are efficient, principled and amicable
• clarify the ministry’s position with representatives from the federal government and other ministries while influencing policy direction that may impact Aboriginal community relations.

Location: Thunder Bay.

What we are looking for in a Director, Aboriginal Community and Stakeholder Relations:


Leadership and management skills:
• ability to provide strategic leadership in a political and culturally sensitive environment
• ability to communicate effectively in a variety of challenging situations
• demonstrated judgment and political acuity when managing risks and issues
• proven ability to influence and manage change.

Technical knowledge:
• knowledge of historical, socio-economic, political and legal context for land claims and issues related to claims negotiation
• knowledge of Aboriginal rights and related issues and the duty to consult with Aboriginal communities.

Relationship management skills:
• knowledge of negotiation and dispute resolution practices to successfully negotiate collaborative agreements with Aboriginal communities and stakeholders
• ability to foster long-term relationships with diverse stakeholders.

Salary range: $115,000 - $131,450
