Mines and lumber mills have closed due to high cost of energy. However the Ontarion government is pushing for wind and solar energy projects which at present are the most expensive sources of energy.
This will drive elactrical rates even higher.
Nuclear power stations are some of the lowest cost and least polluting sources but no, we can not have those.
Hydro power is also low cost and has no pollution baggage but it can not be implemented where wanted. It depends on water power which is not always conveniently located.
The current reduction of green house gases in Ontario has been largely due to closing or converting coal fired generators to gas. Gas while fairly cheap can not be relied for in the future as gas prices, like those for oil, are shure to mostly go up.
I say Ontario needs leadership especially as related to the north:
Road and rail line is needed not only from Nakina to the Ring but all the way to the mouth of the Albany river to provide north south transportation. Similarly for east to west. Four lanes for hiway 11. A road along the shore of Hudson's Bay from Quebec province through Moosonee all the way to Churchill Manitoba.
Old rail lines from Moosonee to the south need to be revamped.
A nuclear power generating station is needed north side of Lake Supperior, probably on shore of Lake Nipigon, to supply cheap electricity to the heart of the north. With that transmision lines to
distribute the power to already existing communities and foster their development.
They better be satisfied with the possible jobs, training and social support that they will get with development or go back to the 18th century without the government cheques. They can not have it both ways.
It takes leadership from our politicians to achieve the above and not photo-ops and endless delaying debates.
