MINING giant Rio Tinto has hit the historic milestone of exporting 1 billion tonnes of iron ore from its Australian operations to China.

Rio Tinto said today that the billionth tonne was loaded on to a vessel at its Cape Lambert port operations, to depart for the economic powerhouse tonight and be delivered to Chinese steel giant Baosteel by early June.

Sam Walsh, Rio Tinto's chief executive, iron ore and Australia, said the landmark shipment highlights the longevity of the miner's relationship with China.

``No other company has exported anywhere near this amount of iron ore to China and it took 38 years for us to do so,'' he said in a statement.

The mining major's first ever shipment to China was in September 1973 - comprising 21,812t of Hamersley lump ore, delivered to a sister company of Baosteel.

The 205,000t of Yandicoogina fines iron ore, setting off for China tonight, was sourced from Rio's Hamersley Iron's mining operations in Western Australia's Pilbara region
