(1) Ring of Fire to be Presented as Strategic Project at NALF3

July 27, 2011 | North America Strategic Infrastructure Leadership Forum News

A new mining frontier, termed the “Ring of Fire”, is developing in the far north of Ontario, Canada, 350 miles northeast of Thunder Bay (Thunder Bay is 350 miles north of Minneapolis). Ontario is Canada’s leading mining province, with annual production from metallic and industrial minerals totaling ten billion dollars. A series of staking rushes in the last five years, ultimately covering 5,000 square km., lead to exploration programs, and the discovery of 5 chromite deposits and one nickel-copper deposit.

Chromite as ferro-chrome, is used to produce stainless steel. The largest chromite deposit is the Black Thor, owned by Cliffs Natural Resources Inc., a 69.5 million tonne deposit grading 31.9% Cr2O3. The area is wet, known for string bogs more than outcrop, and remote, with no ground access or electrical power.

Cliffs and KWG Resources Ltd., another explorer in the Ring of Fire, estimate a road or railroad along an esker complex of some 206 miles, will have to be constructed to access the deposits. Such a corridor will permit power transmission also.

The chromite deposits are valued at $30 B. A nickel-copper deposit was discovered by Noront Resources Ltd., adjacent to the chromite deposits.

Based on the history of mineral exploration in Canada, infrastructure development in the Ring of Fire will lead to further mineral discoveries and economic development.

When:

On October 11-13, 2011, over 500 executives from the public and private sector will gather in Washington, DC for the 3rd Annual North American Strategic Infrastructure Leadership Forum. The Forum is a dynamic 2.5 day conference, focused on infrastructure development in North America, designed to facilitate business and promote projects across the region, as well as showcase the cities, states and provinces with the most innovative infrastructure plans. Project sponsors deliver targeted presentations focused on project needs and business opportunities. Deep-dive workshops and roundtable discussions are led by Forum sponsors and public sector officials, focused on key policy issues surrounding project finance and delivery. Our private meetings system allows registrants to pre-schedule up to 12 meetings with project sponsors and Forum speakers. Networking receptions provide an informal opportunity to meet with potential business partners.

The theme of this year’s Forum is “Visualizing Infrastructure Competitiveness: What’s Real? What’s Not?” and will feature projects from Mexico, Canada, and the United States that will most contribute to the competitiveness of their country and the region, offer strong business opportunities in the next 3-18 months, and contribute to job and opportunity creation for their state or locality. Projects span all sectors, and the Forum features panels covering Energy (electricity generation, transmission & distribution), Transportation (highways, bridges, tunnels, ports, airports, UMT, rail, intermodal logistics corridors) and Digital infrastructure.

Join us in Washington D.C., and learn “What’s Real and What’s Not”, when it comes to Infrastructure Project pipelines, policies, and financing trends!
