"Why a last-second buy?"

Lots of discussion on this subject, and the only thing I can add to it is that if it is a planned timing, it is not done by retail.

I deal with 4 different trading platforms on a fairly regular basis, and on each and every one of them, I cannot place an order to buy or sell in the last minute of trading.

In other words, if I, as a retail trader, wish to place an order, it must be done at least 1 minute before the close, making it impossible to time it as the last trade of the session.

Best regards

K
