Straw man: "A straw man is a component of an argument and is an informal fallacy based on misrepresentation of an opponent's position, twisting his words or by means of [false] assumptions.[1] To "attack a straw man" is to create the illusion of having refuted a proposition by replacing it with a superficially similar yet unequivalent proposition (the "straw man"), and refuting it, without ever having actually refuted the original position.[1][2] Generally, the straw man is a highly exaggerated or over-simplified version of the opponent's original statement, which has been distorted to the point of absurdity. This exaggerated or distorted statement is thus easily argued against, but is a misrepresentation of the opponent's actual statement." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straw_man

Hmmm. Okay, let's look at IW's post.

"Lets suppose that this unthinkable event happened", "Some astronomer would probably step up to the plate and say", "(Canadians) are to blame".

Now that's a fine example of a straw man. Pretty much nailed it there.

"Change is real, climate change is real---yes the polar ice cap is melting now but tomorrow it will freeze again and if it doesn't????"

Thanks for acknowledging that climate change is real! I am glad you asked about the ramifications. Here are just some, with references.

Irreversible changes in the climate, starting with the jet stream:

the release of yet more CO2 through the melting of the permafrost:

accelerating the planetary temperature rise (Dr. James Hansen, NASA):

giving us humans an ever-dwindling chance for surviving on a planet that we ourselves will have made uninhabitable:

More severe droughts and therefore famines, more severe floods and rising sea levels (remember Thailand this summer? Pakistan? New Orleans? Now think New York City, Florida. Most of humanity lives along coastlines), more severe hurricanes and tornadoes, death of forests (happening now): http://carnegiescience.edu/news/case_dying_aspens , more severe and widespread forest fires (Texas this summer, Spain, Greece and Russia the summer before that, and the U.S. West over the past 20 years +/-)... all "unprecedented" events.

That's not the world that anyone wants to live in, but that's the world that our best climatologists are saying that we are creating by continuing to liberate in a short 100 years or so vast amounts of CO2 and other GHG's that were deposited over the course of millions or even billions of years. Unless we choose to change the way we generate and use energy, this is the world we will create for ourselves (and however briefly, our children).

Happy holidays! Now go insulate your houses better and get some PV cells put on your roof.

Please!
