Area for hunting and fishing for a community, assuming a radius of 50 Km = 7850 sq.Km. How much are those rights worth dollar wise to a typical community of several hundred?
If an area that could be taken up by a mine site is as much as 9 x 9 Km = 80 sq. Km it is 1% of above.
Transportation corridor could occupy another 1%.
So the above requirements are 2% of total. So how much is it worth dollar wise as compensation to a community?
Subtract from that the benefit of better infrastructure and good jobs to same community.
So who benefits more and therefore I ask who should pay whom for that benefit?
I would hazard a guess that it benefits the native communities more and they should not raise too much fuss over so called RIGHTS.
If they have an ax to grind on any topic it is only on the possible land and water contamination of region from mining. (Prime example, natives down stream of the tar sands in Alberta have health problems as a consequence.)
