The Thames being polluted by surface run off is a probable indicator of what is happening up north. Being a damp region if there are wells they would be too shallow for the water to be bacteria free. Human and animal waste is the probable cause for that surface contamination.
Hence human action and inaction is a contributing factor for need of sterilization.
