I don't know what happened folks but the message went through in mid-typing.
I left off with a post about an FN protest in BC about BC hydro Dam C. The FN's state they are not opposed to it by want to discuss alternatives. Problem is....what alternatives????
No ideas are brought forward by the FN. Engineers are magically required to dream up ways to satify larger hydro and job requirements without using land. No nuclear, coal, windmills,dams... where is the FN contribution of ideas???
Chief Teresa Spence of Attawapiskat is continuing her hunger strike ..she is protesting some of the issues in Bill C45. She doesn't believe chief's salaries should be made public , she does not believe in transparency. When the government asked her to account for the 90 million given over a 5 year period to a reserve with 500 families....she feels violated. The governement has a right to know what happened to money contributed by taxpayers. Attawapiskat purchased a $96,000 new ice resurfacer for the ice rink (previous ice surfacer) was still working....but the school repairs were not made. Big screen tv's are visible but weatherstripping on the homes is not made. Rather than a hunger strike or holding her breath until she turns blue. Spence should try the grown up approach and account for every nickel of the 90 million have the media publish it...and then she might get more support. Demanding more money but having the attitude of "not your business where I park it.." no longer flies.
As another example...take a look at what's been happening over in Quebec with Strateco and their Matoush uranium project. Strateco has done everything in accordance with what they were supposed to do. They signed Mou's with the cree, they have been actively consulting, employing cree and even moved their office closer to the Cree to accomodate them. they brought them down to Saskatchewan to see Cameco's mine ..had them hold discussions...everything was fine and merry.
Strateco worked hard to get a license from the Canadian Nuclear AGency for advanced exploration ...they spent over 110 million in exporation costs and then boom boom......the Cree want a moratorium on uranium exploration in quebec. Just like that. Fine today and not fine tomorrow.. companies, employees, shareholders...who cares.
Where I am going with this in my long winded way is.....Bill 45 passed through the Senate and needs one more blessing. ....and then...there is some new legislation to work with.
There will be Aboriginal land reform, more transparency required etc. Noront has been sitting back waiting for things to unfold. If they had been at the permit attained stage...there is no doubt in my mind a similar Rubicon event that would have taken place.Rubicon has 3 FN parties to deal with. One out of 3 is not happy and is now suing.
IN the case of Noront...we have Webequie, Marten Falls....and without land REFORM plenty more that will appear laying claim. Impossible to guarantee to have large groups all get along. A Rubicon would result.
Better, to law low... curb exploration for a bit...let some changes take place to make the waters a bit more stable.
