TPG Capital’s Tim Dattels Appointed Co-Head of Asia

TPG Capital, one of the largest private equity investment firms globally, focused on leveraged buyout, growth capital and leveraged recapitalization investments, appointed Tim Dattels as co-head of Asian operations, replacing Stephen Peel.

Mr. Dattels, who will relocate to Hong Kong from San Francisco in the new year, is a former partner of Goldman Sachs Group Inc., and was formerly the Wall Street bank’s head of investment banking in Asia.

He is a director of Blackberry Ltd., and chaired the committee that oversaw a strategic review which culminated in a $1 billion convertible-debenture investment by investors led by Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd. Mr. Dattels is also a director of hotel operator Shangri-La Asia Ltd.

Mr. Dattels replaces managing partner Stephen Peel, who oversaw TPG’s activities in China and India. Mr. Peel will turn his focus to emerging markets outside of Asia, and eventually relocate to London from Hong Kong, the people said.

Mr. Dattels’s co-head in the region is managing partner Ben Gray, who is based in Singapore and heads the buyout firm’s activities in Australia, Japan, Korea and Southeast Asia. Under the new leadership structure, Mr. Dattels and Mr. Gray will lead the entire region.

Mr. Dattels is a director of Blackberry. He's from San Fransciso. I assume he comes out to Waterloo to attend Blackberry meetings at some point??

Warren Irwin, president and chief investment officer of Toronto-based Rosseau Asset Management Ltd., bought a suite at the Shangri-La Toronto so he could be within walking distance of work and the city's entertainment district. The private parking for his Lamborghini was a plus, too. "I've been renting a condo for about seven years, waiting for a nice, bigger condo to be built downtown," he said. The property, from Hong Kong-based Shangri-La International Hotel Management Ltd., is scheduled to open this summer.
