A report identifying 9,300 megawatts of potential new sites of hydro-generated electricity in Northern Ontario says water-power expansion will help remote First Nations get rid of their outdated diesel-powered stations.
“While Ontario’s north has long been recognized for its significant untapped potential, this is the first time we’ve specifically focused on questions of socioeconomic opportunities in the region,” Ontario Waterpower Association president Paul Norris said in a news release.
The OWA report “will help enable planning for the province, First Nations and industries.”
Critics of the expansion of Ontario water-power sites say the province would be better off simply importing more hydro power from existing stations in Quebec and Manitoba.
