First Nations, municipal leaders need to pick project and move forward: NOMA president

By Jamie Smith, tbnewswatch.com

Dave Canfield's parents always told him a bird in the hand is better than two in the bush.

That's the way the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association president looks at at resource activity in the region. Not everyone in Northwestern Ontario believed the hype about Cliffs Natural Resources, he said.

And with their exit comes an opportunity for municipalities and First Nations communities to back Noront Resources' plan and work together to get the provincial and federal government moving forward with infrastructure.

It's the same on the forestry side as the industry is looking to pick up steam again starting next year.

First Nations and municipal leaders need to pick a project and go for it.

"That way there's no more excuses," Canfield, the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association president said.

"Let's jump on this wagon and let's get this thing moving."

It's part of the Road to Resources strategy being developed by NOMA along with First Nations and other Northern partners to have more of a common voice.
