"There's no question those who donate large sums of money to parties, candidates or riding associations have greater access to government. Chances are their phone calls to politicians and candidates will be returned, and the people to whom they are donating large sums of money will be interested in what they have to say.

Eligible contributors can give up to $9,975 to a political party in any year and an additional $9,975 for each campaign period

Among the maximum donors to the Liberal Party in the Feb. 5 byelection were KWG Resources and its subsidiary, Canada Chrome Corporation, who each gave $9,975.

KWG staked claims along an esker leading to the Ring of Fire on which Cliffs Natural Resources was hoping to build an all-weather road. Cliffs has now abandoned its Ring of Fire project and KWG is continuing to lobby for a rail solution to transportation"
