Harper Government Invests to Support Jobs, Growth and Prosperity in Northern Ontario's First Nation Communities

$602,250
FedNor is investing more than $600,000 in the Mushkegowuk Council to support two projects that will encourage business development, growth and job creation, and enhance technology services throughout the organization's catchment area, which includes the First Nation communities of Attawapiskat, Kashechewan, Fort Albany, Moose Cree, Taykwa Tagamou, Chapleau Cree and Missanabie Cree.
Regional Economic Development
To support the implementation of its regional economic development strategy, the Mushkegowuk Council will receive FedNor funding of $457,650. This investment will enable the organization to establish a regional business corporation to support Aboriginal business development and youth entrepreneurs, enhance growth, create new training opportunities, and help First Nation communities identify and capitalize on resource development opportunities in the region.
Geographic Information System
A FedNor contribution of $144,600 to the Mushkegowuk Council will allow member First Nations to undertake a document digitizing initiative. Specifically, the project will help integrate important municipal documents into an existing geographic information systems (GIS), ensuring that the geo-referenced information can be used efficiently in support of shared economic development activities. This strategic investment will also help maximize the effectiveness of the system by training leaders, managers and employees on GIS best practices.
Wakenagun Community Futures Development Corporation (CFDC)
$320,000
Provided through FedNor's Community Futures program, an investment of $320,000 will support the ongoing operations of the Wakenagun CFDC for a one-year period. In particular, the funding will enable the organization to provide small and medium-sized enterprises with access to capital and business counselling services. The Wakenagun CFDC is one of 24 Community Futures Development Corporations funded by FedNor to serve Northern Ontario businesses and communities. CFDCs are community-based, not-for-profit organizations run by volunteer boards and staffed by experienced business and economic development professionals.

Mushkegowuk Ring of Fire plan attracts railroader interest

The Mushkegowuk Council’s Ring of Fire plan for a combination power, railroad and port plan has attracted interest from TGR Rail of Toronto with its highly ambitious plans to acquire the publicly owned Ontario Northland Railway.
The Mushkegowuk Council’s conceptual plan for a Ring of Fire railway, power corridor and James Bay port took a strange twist with talk of a possible partnership talk a private railway company with a keen eye on buying the Ontario Northland Railway.
Mushkegowuk Grand Chief Lawrence Martin caused a media stir in late January at an energy conference in Timmins when he told reporters that his northeastern Ontario tribal council was considering teaming up with TGR Rail to extend rail service to the coast and into the Ring of Fire.
TGR, a Toronto-based rail services company, claimed it had the financing and the team in place
