I believe KWG sees the patent as a competitive advantage. If the patent gives a significant cost advantage from lower processing that can't be duplicated they can use that as leverage in negotiations in the ROF. Additionaly the patent has the potential for being a (patent royalty) revenue stream for KWG.

For NOT having the process in the open domain (no patent) would be the best of all scenarios. With an abundance of natural gas using the process would nullify the Ontario cost of electricity problem to a large extent.
