First Nations Chiefs Gather in Toronto Meeting with Cabinet Ministers

Toronto – NEWS – First Nations Chiefs from across Ontario are meeting this week at the ‘Leaders in the Legislature’ event with Ontario Cabinet Ministers to discuss collaborative actions on First Nations priority issues. Later today, Premier Kathleen Wynne will address the Chiefs in Assembly, followed by a joint session on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s recommendations.

“We called for Ontario to come to the table last year and the government followed through. Three months ago today — on August 24th — we signed the historic Political Accord with Premier Wynne which signals for us a positive government to government relationship,” said Ontario Regional Chief Isadore Day.

The ‘Leaders in the Legislature’ event consists of a series of roundtables for First Nations leaders and Ontario Cabinet Ministers addressing key issues such as resource benefit/revenue sharing, Treaty awareness, health, education, infrastructure, economic development; and missing and murdered indigenous women and girls.

“The fact that both the provincial and federal governments have pledged to implement the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s June 2015 Calls to Action is an enormous opportunity to rebuild and renew our relationship,” said Ontario Regional Chief Day. “We stand upon the precipice of a new era, with willing partners who will finally enable us to secure our rightful place in Canada.”
