From Northern Miner article:
<interim Marten Falls Chief Bruce Achneepineskum stated: "We are united in opposing the proposed Noront and Franco-Nevada deal, and we will do everything in our capacity to make sure that NO ORE WILL EVER LEAVE our backyards without the meaningful involvement and participation of all Matawa First Nations.>
This is a sign of troubles to come ( my capitalization, for emphasis). Do they really speak for all of Matawa? This will probably also impact on Noront's nickel ore because they do not point only to chromite. Participation could mean just jobs (hardly) but involvment must mean part ownership or it's equivalent.
And the last sentence:
"They also object to Noront’s prioritizing of its nickel assets over its chromite ones, and its push to develop an east–west transportation corridor instead of a north–south one that would directly benefit five Matawa communities that are still beyond Ontario’s road system."
What 5 communities when only 2 are objecting. It is plain arrogance of two communities over four others who stand to gain most from the E-W road because they are also without road access. So Marten Falls is to be favoured over Webequie or Aroland over Neskantaga?.
As for the development priorities it is more like a cat's tail wanting to wag not the cat but a dog. It is purely none of their business of priorities that a company does, which are usually based on economics and practicality. How they can object per the last sentence. This kind of objection should'nt even go in front of a judge because of it's impropriety.
All this is a sign of how extremely and inappropriatly they are allowed to be without responsibility and consequence. For that we may have to pay the price down the road to mine development.
