Stainless steel to be used in construction of new Champlain Bridge
The federal government will spend an extra $60 million dollars on construction of the new Champlain Bridge by using stainless steel instead of galvanized steel on key sections of the bridge including the deck.
The Journal de Montreal says about 15,000 tons of stainless steel will be needed.
The director of the new Champlain Bridge Project Vincent Jarry says the extra cost will create a structure with a lifespan of 125 years.
The Quebec galvanized steel industry is upset with the decision saying that the Champlain Bridge will be a North American showcase structure made with foreign material.
