Message: Wynne India trip- Essar Steel Algoma

Back in November , Premier Kathleen Wynne announced that she will lead her first mission to India from January 27 to February 6, 2016.

"India is the world's fourth-largest economy and a priority market for Ontario. The mission is expected to yield new agreements that will increase exports and draw on Ontario's expertise in sustainable development and urban infrastructure. It will also help lay the foundations for future business deals and strengthen cultural ties between India and Ontario."

The timing of Wynne's trip to India is interesting.

Two days ago this news came out:The Parent of Essar Steel Algoma is Essar Group ,INDIA

Essar Steel Algoma will start searching next month for a buyer or major new investor in its Sault Ste. Marie steelmaking operation.

“We expect to begin the sale and investment solicitation process (SISP) and the search for a buyer by mid-February,” Chief Executive Officer Kalyan Ghosh says in a letter sent last week to suppliers.

While we are hopeful that 2016 will bring improved market conditions and new opportunities, Essar Steel Algoma is contending with a tight deadline for its financial restructuring,” Ghosh says.

A significant number of variables will have to align to attract a new investor, but the process calls for a deal to be completed and approved by August 31.”

............

A key piece of information interested parties will require to evaluate Algoma’s operations is Algoma’s business plan, which in turn requires a substantial degree of certainty as to iron ore supply arrangements.”“In canvassing the iron ore pellet market and finalizing its supply strategy, Algoma needs certainty concerning the status of the Cliffs contract.”

The sooner the iron ore pellet supply dispute with Cliffs is resolved, the better Essar Steel Algoma’s chances of attracting interested investors will be, the monitor said.....

We are also working with the three levels of government to address our specific challenges and those of the Canadian steel sector,” Ghosh said.

Back in Dec/2015 Champion iron ore along with an "arms length investor", purchased Cliff's Bloom Lake & Rail.

Fancamp owns approx. 11 million shares of Champion and a nonrecourse 1.5% smelter royalty on these properties which represent in total, billions of tons of ore.

There is no shortage of iron ore to make iron ore pellets..........In Canada.

Wynne's trip to India and Algoma's story 2 days ago made me think back to this article from 2010

http://www.northernontariobusiness.com/Regional-News/sault-ste-marie/Could-Sault-be-site-of-Ring-of-Fire-processing-.aspx

"With service connections from two railroads (including a direct link north to Hearst), port facilities, large business-to-business support, and the existence of a major steel plate and sheet mill, Strapp said the Sault has many pieces in place that “no one else has.”

Strapp said Nakina in northwestern Ontario or Timmins would be likely places for a metallurgical site for McFauld’s Lake ore, but the Sault is ideal to handle processed chromium (ferrochrome) to make stainless steel which would compliment Essar’s operations."

It would benefit Wynne to have some sort of a Rof infrastructure announcement prior or during this trip. It sure would make for a MORE pleasant meeting with Essar Group, India. Getting the ROF moving along would certainly open up some Big Prospects at Algoma and would attract new investors.
