NEWS RELEASE
TERRY SHEEHAN, MP
*************************
On Monday, Terry Sheehan, Member of Parliament for Sault Ste. Marie, and Finance Minister Bill Morneau, met with representatives from Essar Steel Algoma and Tenaris Algoma Tubes in Ottawa.
“It was a productive meeting, which gave Essar and Tenaris an opportunity to brief Finance Minister Morneau on the challenges facing the steel industry in Sault Ste. Marie,” said Terry Sheehan MP for Sault Ste. Marie. “Our Government is willing to listen and Canadians know we are working together with business, other levels of government and the community to grow the economy. I will continue to support Essar and Tenaris as we work toward a stronger Canadian steel industry and I have no intention of letting up.”
Since taking office on October 19, MP Sheehan has been committed to elevating the discussion on domestic steel.
His maiden speech in the House of Commons challenged the Government to think critically about the challenges facing the steel industry.
He has briefed the Northern Ontario, Ontario, and National Liberal caucuses, including Prime Minister Trudeau, on the issue, and was a champion of the Liberal Steel Caucus, which is now up and running.
“In speaking with Mr. Sheehan, I understand Essar Steel Algoma and Tenaris Algoma Tubes met with Finance Minister Morneau to discuss the current state of the steel industry, the impacts on their respective companies, and the communities where they operate. This is encouraging news and the kind of attention this issue needs. We appreciate MP Sheehan's efforts to bring these concerns to the Government's attention and are encouraging officials to act thoughtfully and quickly. It is only through working together that this matter will be satisfactorily resolved in the best interests of all parties,” said Tom Dodds, CEO of Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation.
