Message: Sudbury analysis: Still no action on Ring of Fire

"After Deloitte developed terms of reference for that industrial infrastructure review, another consulting firm was hired. Hatch Mott MacDonald Ltd., an engineering firm, was contracted by the development board to do the technical industrial infrastructure review, which is in its early stages. When completed, the review will provide a common basis of technical information for key partners as discussions regarding industrial infrastructure development continue to advance, says the ministry."

" In late 2011, Hatch was retained by Cliffs to undertake the feasibility study for the extraction and processing of the Black Thor Chromite deposit, transportation of the fines concentrate to a smelter to be located near Sudbury, and bulk concentrate to port facilities on the St. Lawrence Seaway....

...This project involves three components: development of the mine and ore concentrator; an integrated transportation system (ITS) that includes an all-weather access road to link the mine site with the rail system approximately 360 km to the south of the mine near the community if Nakina, and a Transload Facility to move the concentrate from trucks bringing it from the mine to rail cars for shipment to the smelter; and lastly, development of the smelter itself which is to be located near Sudbury....

Hatch Mott MacDonald was subsequently retained by Hatch to provide the planning and feasibility studies for the development of the all-weather access road and Transload Facility for this project. The Transportation Planning group of HMM is directly responsible for delivery of the logistics and safety analyses related to the ITS..."

Hatch and HMM win Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards

"Stuart Bridgeman, Rick Donnelly , Andrew Mellick and, John Pearson accepted an Award of Excellence in the Natural Resources, Mining, Industry & Energy category for the Developing Hydroelectric Potential Northern Ontario project. Hatch was retained by the Ontario Waterpower Association, supported by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, Ontario Power Authority, and the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change, to identify the most cost-effective waterpower sites situated along six major watersheds in northern Ontario. A first-of-its kind geographic information system (GIS) was developed to screen and evaluate the energy potential and implementation costs and determine optimum development schemes. The development will provide off-grid First Nations communities and the Ring of Fire mining region with clean, reliable energy. The study is now being used by the Province of Ontario to support power planning."

"Meanwhile, companies with claims in the Ring of Fire are growing increasingly frustrated, said Miller ( Parry-Sound Muskoka MPP), who also wasn't aware the province had hired Hatch for more consulting work"
