Minister Carr Highlights Commitment to Sustainable Natural Resource Development

TORONTO, April 6, 2016 /CNW/ - The Honourable Jim Carr, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, today delivered a keynote address at the inaugural Ontario Natural Resources Forum in Toronto, where he emphasized the importance of developing natural resources — in Ontario and throughout the country — in a responsible and sustainable way both in Canada and abroad.

In his remarks, Minister Carr discussed the outcomes of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's recent visit to Washington, during which the leaders announced the U.S.–Canada Joint Statement on Climate, Energy and Arctic Leadership, which will see the two countries cooperate on a host of energy- and natural resource-related issues and took steps to establish a new long-term agreement for softwood lumber.

The Minister also highlighted actions taken by the Government of Canada with respect to energy, including Mission Innovation — a partnership between 20 countries, which aims to double government investments in clean energy; the signing of the North American Memorandum of Understanding on Climate Change and Energy Collaboration; and the Government's interim approach for the review of major resource projects.

He also emphasized the critical role of the forest industry — and its contribution to carbon mitigation — in Canada's transition to a low-carbon future, as well as the significance of the mining industry in Ontario and Canadian mining leadership globally.

Finally, Minister Carr underscored how the Government's first federal budget delivers strategic investments in energy, mining, forestry and clean technology to bring Canadians good jobs, create a cleaner environment and help communities thrive.
