Clothing should not define any of us
Parry Sound North Star
It is bikini weather outside.
Like you, we at the Beacon have been pushing through this latest heat spell looking for ways to stay comfortable though air conditioning rather than itsy-bitsy wardrobe changes seem to be doing the job. Not that there is anything wrong with the alternative.
Bikinis are on the mind not because of anything we’ve seen dockside in the past few days but rather the media scrutiny being focused on a junior mining company’s promotional videos for a stake in the much-touted, little-developed Ring of Fire find in Ontario’s far north.
Media outlets around the globe have picked up on the story of a spokeswoman selling the mining investment in a series of YouTube videos, sometimes while wearing a bikini.
Coverage is definitely the story here, though, we have to say it is media attitudes and not the size of the swimsuit we take issue with here. In this age and time it never ceases to amaze how so many people are so free with an opinion about what women should or should not wear. Whether celebrity news tabloids, school dress codes or sensationalized stories such as this, one might think there would be a bit more caution about for taking a woman to task for her wardrobe choices. It seems the shirtless prime minister has garnered less criticism, even from within the partisan fish bowl where he swims.
In the future our hope is what a woman has to say will be more important than what she is wearing and put this double standard behind us.
