Message: Sudbury to host Trudeau, federal cabinet

Lefebvre has been playing up the ROF to his Sudbury constituents and hinting the ROF will be ignited by the Trudeau gov't on many occasions......This federal meet back in Sudbury would seem to fulfill those promises. Monday evening Aug 22 seems as good a day as any....

There was no specific mention of other infrastructure investments in the rich chromite deposits in the James Bay Lowlands in the budget. Lefebvre said no projects were identified anywhere in Canada, but billions will be invested in such projects.

The money for First Nations will be invested in decent housing and potable water for indigenous people who badly need them. Many of the First Nations that will receive funding are located in northwestern Ontario, in and around the Ring of Fire.

Investments in basic necessities "all go together" with money the federal government may spend on other infrastructure such as roads, rail and hydroelectric systems, said Lefebvre.

We all know the potential of the Ring of Fire (and) that First Nations will play a key role,” Lefebvre said. “That is the first path forward in the Ring of Fire (and) it's very important for us as a government.

And while there's no money in the budget specifically for the Ring of Fire, there is money available for social and physical infrastructure and he's focused on helping the city access that money.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and 30 of his closest friends, his cabinet ministers, will visit Sudbury this weekend to discuss priorities for the new session of Parliament starting Sept. 19.

Trudeau will lead the cabinet retreat Aug. 20-22, the first time in recent memory a prime minister has brought his executive to the Nickel City for such a meeting.

Officials with the Prime Minister's Office and the Privy Council Office are playing it close to the vest where the politicians will stay and what exactly they will be doing. Some details of their itinerary are expected to be released Wednesday.

Sudbury Liberal MP Paul Lefebvre said plans are being finalized for an event Monday evening, which members of the community and the media will be invited to attend.

Lefebvre called it historic for cabinet to meet in Sudbury, calling it an honour for the city. Having the most influential members of government developing a better understanding of Sudbury will help when they and Lefebvre return to Ottawa and he advocates for his community.

Trudeau and cabinet will see Sudbury in all its glory, its natural beauty and northern hospitality, but they will also learn about some of the challenges city residents are facing.

Lefebvre welcomed three caucus colleagues to Sudbury this week, treating them to a visit to the world-renowned SNOLAB. The MPs were impressed and said they wanted to return.

He took one of them to Science North and the visiting MP told Lefebvre that Sudburians are fortunate to live in such a city.

The more his caucus colleagues visit Sudbury, the more they are impressed, said Lefebvre, who takes pride in showing off Sudbury.

The three visiting MPs were astonished there were so many lakes in Sudbury and that the city was so green.

Lefebvre said there is much to promote about Sudbury including the world-class research - medical and scientific - that is being done here.

Trudeau and his cabinet are expected to be in the city from Saturday to Monday, and to make at least one public appearance.

Cabinet ministers will likely split up and visit public institutions such as Health Sciences North and other organizations with which their departments are associated.

This is the third cabinet retreat Trudeau has held since he and his Liberals were elected in a majority last October. The first was held in the spring in New Brunswick at what some observers called a swanky, seaside lodge. The PM and cabinet got some bad press about that retreat because it cost taxpayers $150,000.

Right after that, Trudeau took his road show to a mountain resort in Kananaskis County, 85 kilometres west of Calgary. The federal politicians brain-stormed there and met with Alberta premier Rachel Notley.

Trudeau has said he doesn't want his cabinet living in a bubble, so he's encouraging ministers to get out into communities and mingle with Canadians.

The International Mine Rescue Competition is being held in the city Aug. 19-26, the first time the event has been held in Canada. Lefebvre said he and Nickel Belt Liberal MP Marc Serre will attend the official opening of the competition, accompanied by MaryAnn Mihychuk, minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour, who will also be here for the cabinet retreat.
