In 2001 De Beers were searching for diamonds in Canada’s far north. They uncovered the first deposit, which led 33 companies to explore the area now known as the “Ring of Fire” (ROF). An estimated $120 billion worth of minerals were found by 2007. But almost a decade later, not one ounce has left the ground and only 2 companies remain. The documentary “Firestarter” tells the story of how, First Nation mistrust, massive infrastructure costs, environmental fears and of course politics have delayed one of Canada’s largest economic finds in a generation. Will a deal be made or will the last two companies be forced to leave the ROF and leave its potential to change the country and isolated First Nation’s communities?
