Message: Wynne working the background?

I expect Wynne is speaking about supporting the restructuring of Algoma to put the final piece in place for the downstream flow of chromite in the fabrication of stainless steel.  This would certainly help Algoma 'thrive'.

Wynne will also likely support the local rail that Algoma uses as well?

Time for the ring to ignite after all this falls into place and the puppetmaster releases the strings?

Wynne says province won't leave city in the cold

The Ontario government will be at the table to help the steel industry in Sault Ste. Marie succeed and for the community to continue with its diversification efforts, Premier Kathleen Wynne said.

She said the government has been working with all parties throughout the Companies Creditors' Arrangement Act and will continue to do so as the restructuring process continues.

“I just want to be clear that our government understands the importance of the steel industry to the Sault,” she said.

She said that the government's commitment is to work with the parties as the restructuring process moves towards its final leg.

“We want to see steel in Sault Ste. Marie thrive. We are working with all the parties going through that process and we know that there continue to be challenges but we're right there. We're not leaving the process. We're committed to seeing it through,” she said.

Wynne also said she understands the concerns about the steelmaker's non-payment of property taxes and promised to take the concerns back to Queen's Park and determine if the government can help.

“I can't tell you directly what levers we can pull exactly but it is a real concern to me that the civic responsibility is falling through the cracks,” she said.

With Sault Ste. Marie at the heart of the Great Lakes, central to Canada and to a vast transportation network, Wynne said she understands the importance of the transportation hub the city is trying to develop.

A diversified economy is also part of that future success,” she said. “And the transportation hub can play a role in that diversification.”

Huron Central a 'canary in the coal mine', says rail expert

The 44-employee Huron Central hauls freight for Essar Steel Algoma in the Sault, Domtar pulp and paper in Espanola, and EACOM sawmill in Nairn Centre. Those companies account for 88 per cent of the line’s traffic, amounting to 12,000 carloads annually.

“In five years, there is a lot that can happen,” G & W president Louis Gravel told Sault Ste. Marie city councillors on April 24.

Down the road, he said, mining and other business could “improve the volume and the tonnage to make it profitable in the long term.”
