Sudbury letter: Liberals have to go

It is a disgrace to the citizens of Ontario that a mining company in the Ring of Fire, which has negotiated a deal with native groups in the area, now has to go to China to get some help to build a railway or road to the south so they can deliver ore to a refinery for processing.

About four ago, the provincial Liberals said they would provide $1 billion, along with $1 billion from the federal government, to get the project underway. The feds are waiting for the province to put the funds in place and they will follow.

Over the course of this time, a major corporation, Cliff Natural Resources, which was interested in developing the area and would eventually employ thousands of people, sold their assets in the Ring of Fire to Noront Resources, in part because the Wynne government could not negotiate a reasonable cost for hydro.

The children on these reserves are committing suicide at a very high rate and they are being provided medical help. There is no doubt that many of the residents suffer from remoteness and wanting a better life as they see others in the south enjoying. They have no way out that is affordable. Education, health care, availability of work and amenities that we all enjoy are not accessible to them. Give these children a fighting chance.

Where is the commitment to start work on the project by the Liberals? They have already lost one major player and they do not seem to mind whatsoever that a foreign company may gain ownership of a strategic growth area for the whole country. Some have considered it to be as valuable to Canada as the Alberta tar sands.

It is important to all Ontarians who care about our province to vote in the next year's election to get rid of the Liberals, regardless of any promises they make in the coming year. They have broken so many

that it seems to be a part of a policy of deceit and carelessness.

Northern Ontario can become a major economic engine if we get a change in government. It cannot be any worse.
