The Ring of Fire was also addressed in the debate, with all candidates agreeing that First Nations rights and environmental standards must be respected in any development that goes forward.

But economic growth is also important, stressed Angus.

"When we look at Northern Ontario and the wealth that has been shipped out of here ... and we have to go and beg, cap in hand, for handouts from Queen's Park and Ottawa, we have to stand up for our economy," said the Timmins-James Bay MP. "And the people who have been left out completely have been the indigenous people on whose territory this is."

Angus said Ring of Fire development must be carried out "with consultation and respect, to make sure the people of the communities benefit and people of the North are going to benefit."
