One of the things I loved about the ROF was that it would allow the northern Ontario FN to start earning good salaries and income as a community to allow them to become like the rest of Canadians who pay taxes and benefit from an outstanding quality of life in a great country where we believe in freedom and equality. When I heard Frank speak of income earned on reservations not being subject to Canadian law or tax my stomach turned over.
This would extend to all FN if a pan-Canadian resource sharing agreement were to come about.
One would assume that FN people would want to join the rest of Canada as equals in all respects. Not paying taxes would put them in the class of a charity or a religion?
Does this mean the support from the public coffers would continue indefinitely as well? It does not seem prudent to be able to have it both ways.
Is this another burden for the shoulders of the ROF after reconciliation?
